THE SHORTLIST

We are delighted to announce  this year’s shortlist. We had more entries than ever before, and choosing a shortlist and winners was agonisingly difficult. But – finally – we did it!

The overall winner has been contacted to ensure that edits were made in time for the ExBerliner print deadline. Their name and the names of our 3 runners up will be announced on July 1st. Over the summer you’ll get a chance to read all the stories on our shortlist. Keep an eye on social media, our newsletter and website for all the updates … not to mention an invitation to our September party when we’ll celebrate the competition, have readings from the winning stories and award the prizes.

There is no order to this list, it is not alphabetised or in order of placement.

A Reminder of the Competition Details
The Reader Berlin and EXBERLINER are delighted to announce our 2016 short story contest. This year, we’re looking for fiction on the theme “A Summer Night”. As the days grow longer and we slough off the last grey cells of another Berlin winter, it’s time to let your imagination run riot and tell us your tales of summer nights…

The contest will be judged by a team from the Reader Berlin and EXBERLINER. Winners will receive publication by EXBERLINER, cash prizes, and more.

As ever, a huge thanks to our sponsors The Circus Hotel and Jameson Whiskey, without whom this kind of thing would neither be fun nor possible.

THE PRIZES

First place: Publication in the summer print edition of EXBERLINER, €100, and a goodie bag.

Runners up (3): Publication on the EXBERLINER website, €50, and a goodie bag.

The ten finalists will have their stories featured on The Reader Berlin showcase, and have the opportunity to perform their work live at a Reader Sunday Salon event in autumn.

THE RULES

Entry is free. Send your entry to competition@thereaderberlin.com.

Deadline: May 31st at midnight (CET). No exceptions! Given that technology is fallible and the internet gods are easily angered, we recommend you do not put off sending your story until the final hour…

Word limit: 1500–3500

Format: 12pt, Times, double spaced. Doc files only! Save your file as <title>.doc and include the title of your story, author name, and contact details (including phone number) in your email. As the contest will be judged blind, do not put any identifying details within the document itself.

All submissions must be original, unpublished, and in English.

Only one submission per author.

No simultaneous submissions.

The judges panel will meet on Monday 13th June. The shortlist will remain top secret until it is revealed at the Sunday Salon on June 19th.

The shortlist will appear on this page on Tuesday 21st June.

The winner and three runners-up will be announced on the 1st July! Watch this space!

Copyright remains with the author. We reserve the right to publish the ten shortlisted stories on The Reader website, the two runners-up on EXBERLINER website, and the winner in print in the summer issue of EXBERLINER.
